( May 22, 2015) The Striped Bass are in:
They came in later than normal, but they came in, and they came in strong! Lots of people are starting to catch them in all of the local NH hot spots. Rye Harbor, Hampton Harbor, and of course the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth. This time of year quite a few of the striped bass will be caught at many of the head dams that branch off from the Great Bay. Downtown Dover, Exeter, Newmarket, and Durham. The Alewives ( River Herring ) are heading in to get up over the dams, and they are also being chased by the Striped Bass. The best way to fish using this method is to bring two rods out with you. One for catching the Alewife, and the other for sending the Alewife back out for the Striped Bass, usually using a balloon to keep the bait from tangling on the rocks along the bottom. ( Remember in NH, Wednesday is the only day you can't catch or harm Alewives ). The best ways to catch the Alewives is either by using snagging hooks or using sabiki rigs.
Stop in and we will show you how it is done... and we will set you up with exactly what you need.
